Book Review: Dad Is Fat

Dad Is Fat by Jim Gaffigan

If you’re a parent, READ THIS BOOK! Hell, even if you’re not a parent, READ THIS BOOK!

Dad Is Fat by comedian/writer/child herder Jim Gaffigan (along with his wife Jeannie) put together one of the most amusing yet accurate books about parenting you’ll ever find. And maybe it was just me, but the inside voice I used while reading this was the exact one Jim Gaffigan used in the “Hot Pockets” skit:

I mean the fact that this man has five children under 10 years old and lives in a two-bedroom apartment in New York City tells you all you need to know – this man is insane and needs your money! And to have five kids in NYC requires a sense of humor. Sometimes comedians write books that just suck but this one, this one is pure gold. Honestly, this book is well worth the money (even though I took it out from the library).

From a parents struggle getting the kids out the door on time to mistaken gender identity of children to birthday party invites every other weekend, he really nails every aspect of parenting in a way that even parents with just one child can relate to. And let it be known that giving a kid a lollipop immediate relieves the screaming.

Every chapter is about three pages long, just short enough to keep my attention but long enough to get his point across, in a weird, sarcastic, hilarious way.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book. Or just take it out of the library if you’re poor like me.
