7 Random NCAA Basketball Nicknames

I will not be so ambitious as to rundown and rank every one of the hundreds of college nicknames but will instead discuss some that jump off the page as awesome to me, since this is my blog. This is intended to be enjoyed by boneheads like me who do random things when you’re bored and it’s snowing and the Winter Olympics is showing Slovakia and the Czech Republic in ice hockey – holy crap, while researching these nicknames, Slovakia (who was down 4-0) is only down one with 12 minutes left.

Notes

Indiana Univ. – Purdue Univ. Fort Wayne

Mastodons

Summit

19-9

Mastodons have been extinct for over 10,000 years but there isa band named Mastodon that kills!

Univ. of Tennessee at Martin

Skyhawks

OVC

8-19

Where the hell else would a hawk of any kind soar? The sky. Hawks would have been sufficient.

Southern Utah Univ.

Thunderbirds

Big Sky

1-22

Thundercats, HOOOOO! Oh, Thunderbirds? Like the car? Or the spiritual totem pole?

Stetson Univ.

Hatters

Atlantic Sun

7-19

A school from Florida whose actual school name is derived from a benefactor from Texas. No hats in basketball.

Univ. of Akron

Zips

MAC

17-8

Logo is a female kangaroo. Are there really kangaroos in Akron, Ohio? Props for being an equal opportunity mascot school.

Univ. of California, Irvine

Anteaters

Big West

17-9

Who doesn’t love an anteater? They eat ants and termites, two of the worst things you’ll find around your home.

Longwood Univ.

Lancers

Big South

8-19

Literally located in Farmville. Lancers were a type of cavalrymen, but the logo indicates it’s a horse of some sort.

That’s it, I’m going to watch this game. Slovakia is putting it to the Czech Republic as I type and I’m too far away to watch. Coffee and hockey.
